Boyzone Pay Emotional Tribute To Stephen Gately
Gave It All Away, which is soon to be released as the latest single from the Irish band Boyzone, and was written by Mika, will be the last track that will feature all five original members following the death of Stephen Gately in Majorca in October 2009 where he was staying with his husband.
Accompanied by a emotional video that begins with Gately shown in a black and white video, it sees him lead the vocals singing “I will learn to live before I die” as one of his first lines. Filled with archive footage of Gately, the video, which is filmed in an empty room sees the four remaining Boyzone members, Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch, in a reflective mood that moves between sadness and happier times where they reminisce over happy times with Gately.
Refusing to make any form of big budget video for the track, the band decided to film the simplistic video with just them and the director Paul Griffin, with Keating telling the Daily Mail that ‘The footage is incredibly raw and tough to watch at times but we didn’t want it being too mournful and there’s lots of laughter. …’It’s us reminiscing about the times we had with our other brother. My favourite scene sees us four sat around a table at the end with Stephen’s favourite picture hanging behind us.”
Saying it was one of the hardest things they’d done, Keating also told listeners to his Magic FM radio show that ‘It’s a great tribute and a great memory, thank God we have it.’
