Gay Marriage Opposition

Following the repeal of gay marriage in Maine, the National Organization of Marriage (NOM) believe if same sex marriage bills do not pass in both New York and New Jersey then it will be a sign that same sex marriage is not wanted in the country with Maggie Gallagher, the president of NOM starting ” If they are unable to pass gay marriage in New York and New Jersey, combined with the loss in Maine, it will confirm that gay marriage is not the inevitable wave of the future’’.

Evan Wolson, executive director of Freedom to Marry however disputes this fact highlighting that “In any civil rights struggle there are going to be periods of creeping and periods of leaping,’’, something which has definitely been seen in this case, with the first step being the ruling in 2003 by the Massachusetts Supreme Court that gay couples had the right to get married, which was then followed by thirty states amending their constitutions to state marriage can only be between a man and a woman, with twenty seven of them adopted.

And it is in the Northeast that, up until the Maine loss, the path of gay marriage equality was looking relatively smooth with the Connecticut Supreme Court recognizing the gay marriages last year, and gay marriage bills being adopted in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, with the City Council in Washington, D.C., looking to legalize gay marriage next month.

Since last month though things have started to look a bit more rocky in the journey for marriage equality with Maine overturning same sex marriage before it was able to take effect, with New York and New Jersey the next steps on the marriage equality map. Currently both states do appear to be positive towards the idea, with New York recently ruling that gay couples married outside NY were entitled to some government benefits, and New Jersey polls seeing the for and against being mere percentage points apart, however there is some concern about the gay marriage bill  in New Jersey due to the fact gay marriage supporter Democratic Governor Jon Corzine is leaving office in January and being replaced with Republican Chris Christie who has promised to veto any such bill.

Is the fight for gay marriage starting to fall apart just as it is gaining such strength? Both supporters and opponents are likely to be keeping a close on these two states to find out the answer…
