Carnival has to be Sitges’ wildest party. Even though it is on in February it is still the hottest party in town! On the most popular days you will find more than 300,000 partygoers dancing on the major streets across the town. The busy months of July and August look positively dead! Gay boys and girls from the 4 corners of the world descend on our little town and party the week away!

Jueves Lardero or Fat Tuesday,marks the beginning of carnival with a huge celebration of local dishes and the arrival of the King of the Carnestoltes and ends with the Burial of a Sardine on Ash Wednesday. There’s more to do than eat, though.

Carnival Route And Parade Times

Thursday 11th February

7pm – Arrival of the Carnival King – La Fragata

Immediately afterwards, the king and his entourage make their way to Can Bota Park to choose the Carnival Queen. Via – Psg de la Ribera and Espanya

7.45pm – The choosing of the Carnival Queen

The king will continue to the Town Hall accpmpanied by Markatu Batucada and Timbasio.

His majest will adress the townspeople at the Town Hall and read the “Predicot”

Sunday 14th February

9pm – “Disbauxa” Parade Défilé de la Disbauxa (Rua de la Disbauxa)

Itinerary

The Sitges Gay Carnival takes place 4 days before the regular Sitges Carnival begins. Jam packed with events it includes La noche rosa, Pink night, Noche de las Mantillas – where people wear traditional Spanish normally worn at weddings & funerals, Noche de las touristas, – the tourist night (great fun) and finally the Noce de las Viudas or the Widows night (probably because you’ve murdered your boyfriend for being bold).

Preliminary Dates

Events begin the Sunday before Carnival (Dated for 2010 to be confirmed))

The busiest days are Sunday and Tuesday, when the local carnival parade makes its way down the Rua del Extermini in decorated carriages, sporting the campest razzle-dazzle type outfits you have ever seen. (The parades are themed, Rua de la Disbauxa -r the Debauchery Parade, on Sunday night and the Rua de l‘Extermini – the Extermination Parade, on Tuesday night.

Tuesday, the final day of carnival, also sees some amazing drag shows. Think you have seen it all… you haven’t! Some of Europe’s top drag performers make their way to sitges to bitch-battle it out with each other to the great amusements of the revelers.

We liked it better when he was making fun of Mariah Carey. Sounds like Eminem has something against Adam Lambert and gay performers in general in a new song, “Elevator,” leaked from his forthcoming album, Relapse: Refill.

Entertainment Weekly reports the track spouts offensive lyrics like, “Sorry, Lance, Mr. Lambert, and Aiken ain’t gonna make it / They get so mad when I call them both fake, it’s / All these f—in’ voices in my head, I can’t take it!”

Black Ugandan Lesbian Couple

A proposed anti-gay law could make Uganda perhaps the most dangerous place for homosexuals and drive the gays of Uganda further underground. In a rare interview, the first of its kind with a newspaper journalist, a lesbian told Saturday Monitor’s Rodney Muhumuza why she is very scared.

The Sunday before last, Val Kalende listened quietly as her pastor’s sermon digressed into a soft tirade against homosexuals. “We may even have one in our midst,” the cleric told a congregation of about 50 born-again Christians.

If Ms Kalende did not know her pastor to be an honourable man, a father figure, his sudden anti-gay remarks would have left her shifting uncomfortably in her chair, wondering if those dreaded words were meant for her.

In the end, the woman who also serves as a minister, regularly taking her place on the worship team at her church of eight months, chose to let it go. It would not be her last time there.

Ms Kalende’s chosen place of worship is a small church somewhere in Zana, in Wakiso, not too far from her Namasuba house, past a stage for motorcyclists who have made it a habit to ask if she is a man or a woman.

Washington DC - there's hope!

Today, D.C.’s Council made it official and same-sex marriage is now legal in the district by a final vote of 11-2!

The victory for equal rights prompted public witnesses in the Council chambers to cheer and applaud.

The bill, which may be signed into law by D.C.’s mayor as early as tonight, will go before Congress for a review period of 30 legislative days before it becomes law.

Council member Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) stated:

“Today is the final step in a long march toward equality.”

Same-sex Marriage Button

FOR LESBIAN, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Rhode Islanders, the law is a fickle creature.

While the state does not have a “defense of marriage” act on its books, it still does not grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples even though, according to a decision issued by Attorney General Patrick Lynch, marriages performed out-of-state are recognized by Rhode Island. If, however, these out-of-state gay and lesbian married couples wish to get a divorce, the Family Court Act of 1967 defines divorce as an act between a man and a woman.

It was precisely this kind of legal confusion that prevented Mark Goldberg from being able to claim the body of his partner of 17 years, Ron Hanby, after he committed suicide. The couple had a marriage license from the state of Connecticut, but for 32 days, Goldberg was not allowed to claim his partner’s body and carry out his final wishes.

To correct this terrible injustice, a bill was introduced in the Rhode Island General Assembly that would have allowed domestic partners to make funeral arrangements for each other. The bill, which passed nearly unanimously, was then vetoed by Gov. Donald Carcieri, who said that it was a “disturbing trend towards redefining marriage.”
