Bono, 42, grew up as Chastity and was a lesbian activist for many years. He announced two years ago that he was transitioning and completed the process last year, albeit in the public eye.

Speaking to TIME, he said he had “confused gender identity with sexual orientation” when younger.

He said: “So when I was about 13 or 14, I realised I was attracted to women and then made the assumption that I was a lesbian, and didn’t realise that that wasn’t the case. It was the fact that I was a man and a heterosexual man. The issue wasn’t my sexual orientation, but rather my gender identity.”

The star, who says he wants to speak up for trans rights, has refused to talk about whether he has had genital surgery.

But he said that he was “thrilled” about the results of his ‘upper’ surgery, or breast removal.

“It was the greatest day, probably of my life,” he said. “It was getting rid of something on my body that felt like it didn’t belong there since they started to develop at, like, 11 or 12.”

Bono revealed that he spent time talking to psychologists about how he would deal with transition but said he “never had a moment’s doubt” about whether it was the right thing to do.

He said: “I had felt uncomfortable as a women my whole life. So that wasn’t the issue. It was about finding the strength to transition and how that would affect my life.”

The star added that he was continuing to publicise his journey to “bring awareness” of the issue.

“The freedom to pursue one’s own sexuality is part of an individual’s freedom of expression,” said Justice Carlos Ayres Britto, the writer of the opinion.

The vote was 10-0. One justice abstained due to previous statements in favor of same sex civil unions.  A few here in the States will argue this ruling is nothing but separate and equal. Advocates in Brazil are having none of that.

“There is something to celebrate this result,”  said Cleber Vicente, project coordinator for the Rainbow Group in Rio de Janeiro (as reported by the country’s state run the state-run Agencia Brasil). “It is a struggle that stretches for over 15 years.”

This decision makes Brazil and Argentina as the two South American countries to recognize gay relationships. [UPDATE: As Jay reminded in the comments, Uruguay passed civil union legislation in December of 2007]

The separate but equal debate is worth having, but this decision is all success. Sure the word marriage is missing, but please consider this: a country, with an extremely large Roman Catholic population, just gave legal recognition/rights to gay families. If this isn’t a win, then the word is meaningless.

“Growing up Mormon was difficult for someone like me,” Robinson, 20, said on the show’s premiere. “I’m gay. Doesn’t define me, but that’s what I am.”

“My dad and I don’t have the best relationship. He hasn’t been supportive of my music,” he added. “Also my father does not know that I’m gay. I haven’t actually told him yet. I guess he knows now.”

Directed by Giuseppe Storelli, an Italian who lives in Barcelona since 2002, Gayxample is a fun and exciting web series, is a reflection of the daily life of seven main characters, with their joys and sorrows, loves, drama, sex , dreams, relationships and family dynamics different from the gay perspective. Barcelona is a platform for the world that aims to entertain and leave an imprint on the viewer regardless of their sexual status.

“It’s an entertainment series with a tinge of drama,” says Ivan Yanez, the actor who plays the character of Toni. “It also aims to educate on various sensitive issues, including AIDS,” reveals the director. Still, he and his group of actors-many novice-acknowledges this comic spirit.

However, Gayxample tries to go further and aware to the cause. “While there is a homophobic point of view, are necessary projects like this,” explains Babeth Ripoll, the actress who is placed on the skin of a social worker rather peculiar.

The series will air every Saturday at midday through the website of the same name and will be subtitled in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch to get as far as possible through the network.

With this first season, his director Giuseppe Storelli hopes to raise funds to agree a second delivery Gayxample. President Barack Obama has announced Jeremy Bernard will become the first man, and the first openly gay person to fill the demanding job.

“Jeremy shares our vision for the White House as the People’s House, one that celebrates our history and culture in dynamic and inclusive ways.  We look forward to Jeremy continuing to showcase America’s arts and culture to our nation and the world through the many events at the White House,” Obama said in a statement.

Bernard, a former Victory Fund board member, currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy of Paris.  He served as the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2008 to 2010.  Previously, Bernard was a California Finance Consultant for the Obama for American campaign.

President Obama has appointed more openly LGBT Americans to his administration than any president in U.S. history, often with the assistance of the LGBT community’s Presidential Appointments Project, which is headed by the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute.

The first couple’s civil partnership was registered on 7th February 2011 and a second, on the 11th of February. Both couples were male.

The Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act, 2010 came into force on January 1st 2011 and requires a minimum of three months notice between the application for a civil partnership and the date of the ceremony. However, a judge can waive the notice perioid on compassionate grounds, primarily the serious illness of one of the partners.

Tiernan Brady of the Gay and Lesbian Network told the Sunday Times that celebration of the first two partnerships were historic milestones. “It’s really fantastic,” he said. “It’s the culmination of a long process. It’s great to have state recognition for these partnerships. It’s a gigantic leap forward for Ireland. Civil partnership addresses real needs for real couples.”

A gay couple who had a civil partnership in Northern Ireland and later became naturalised as Irish citizens, became the first officially recognised civil partners in the state last month.

Civil partnerships offer some of the same rights to property and pensions as marriage but do not have the same tax status. This element was to have been confirmed in a finance bill that has now been curtailed as a result of Ireland’s general election on February 25th. All parties have pledged to introduce the changes to taxation law after the election. However, it is not known if the changes will be retrospective and cover the couples who have already registered their partnership, should one of the pair die.

Like Britain, many campaigners say civil partnerships are not enough and the Labour party has pledged in its manifesto to hold a referendum to decide on the introduction of same-sex marriages. The Labour party has also pledged to allow gay couples to jointly adopt children.

In Britain, the first civil partnership to be registered involved a terminally ill man, who was given special dispensation to ignore the fifteen day notice period of a civil partnership.

The world’s largest online social network also gives its users the option to list themselves as single, married, in an open relationship or “it’s complicated,” among others.

The option for civil unions or domestic partnerships is only available to Facebook users in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France and Australia, said the nonprofit Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which has been among the groups working with Facebook to add the options.

Facebook said it is rolling out the feature in countries where users asked for it.

“We will monitor user reaction and requests, and assess how to move forward with the rollout based on how this is going, and respond,” said Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes in an e-mail statement.

Facebook has well over 500 million users. About 70 percent of them live outside of the U.S.
