Out basketball player Jason Collins has signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets. He now is the first openly gay athlete in the history of the National Basketball Association.
According to Yahoo Sports, the 35-year-old will be ready when the team meets for a game today, 23 February, against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 13-year NBA veteran came out in a Sports Illustrated article last year.
The center has been unsigned since then, but will now serve as the Nets’ backup center. He played for the team, when it was called the New Jersey Nets, from 2001 to 2008. Former teammate, Jason Kidd, is the team’s head coach.
